Board of Trade and the Name Question
A March 2, 1894 item from The Clipper-Citizen reported that prominent Eddyville citizens organized a Board of Trade with Benton Maret as president, George A. Brown as vice president, J. H. Edmisten as secretary, and M. W. Stuckey as treasurer.
The board aimed to protect and extend the town’s interests, including new roads, road improvements, and a livestock and agricultural show.
The article also mentioned a proposal to change the town name from Eddyville to Hamilton or Congdon. Hamilton honored a former Kearney and Black Hills Railroad manager who had supported Eddyville’s early development. Congdon was the older name attached to the post office before the railroad. The board was reportedly divided between the two names, and no decision had yet been reached.
